BEYOND BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Celebrating Bessie Coleman and Bessie Stringfield
Arts-integrated African-American History Curriculum for Grades K-5:
Two Bessies on Two Wheels
Two Bessies on Two Wheels
During Black History Month 2023, Clemmons Family Farm shared "Two Bessies on Two Wheels" our arts-integrated curriculum for grades K-5 about two courageous African-American women who were pioneers in travel: Bessie Coleman, the first Black woman to receive a pilot's license in the United States, and Bessie Stringfield, the first Black woman to ride a motorcycle alone across the United States.
Schools in 28 different Vermont school districts/supervisory unions enrolled to access the Two Bessies on Two Wheels curriculum. Schools/school districts in New York, New Jersey, Maine, New Hampshire, Virginia and Washington State also enrolled! Students learned, communed and created art to link Bessie Coleman and Bessie Stringfield's joy in motorcycles, airplanes, and adventure to modern day stories in their communities!
