To Sing of Common Things Speakers' Series

Picture

Watch Our Five-Part 2018 "To Sing of Common Things" Speakers' Series
in the Barn House Storytelling Room below!

Above: This sweet recap of our five-part 2018 "To Sing of Common Things: The Voices of Young People"  speakers' series features the seven talented young speakers reading the Paul Laurence Dunbar poem, "Common Things," after which the annual series is named.
Our To Sing of Common Things Series is named after the poem by Paul Laurence Dunbar which celebrates the small and humble joys of daily life that are too often taken for granted.
"We like the man who soars and sings
With high and lofty inspiration;
But he who sings of common things
Shall always share our admiration."

                      ~Paul Laurence Dunbar
Description:  The Clemmons Family Farm's 2018 To Sing of Common Things speakers' series presented five events that featured teenaged scholars who are creative writers and spoken word artists. The young speakers' presentations shared how they use their art to express their feelings, find their grounding and take action. The speakers also shared brief performances of selections of their creative works. Ms. Kiah Morris and Mr. Rajnii Eddins, professional spoken word artists, based in Bennington, Vermont and Burlington, Vermont respectively, co-hosted this dynamic series.

Offered free to our community, our To Sing of Common Things speakers' series was co-organized with The Young Writers’ Project and was funded in part by the Vermont Humanities Council and by ArtPlace America. Filming of the five-part series was done through a collaboration between the Clemmons Family Farm, RETN, and the Vermont Commons School.  All of the events were held in the beautiful storytelling room of the historic Barn House on the Clemmons Family Farm.

Below:  The grande finale of our 5-part 2018 To Sing of Common Things series featured spoken word artists Rajnii Eddins and Kiah Morris who each gave powerful performances of selections of their original creative works. The performances were followed by one of the richest and most emotional discussions we've had with an audience, and the opportunity for deep community-building and healing.
